According to UC Berkeley, “An informational interview is an informal conversation with someone working in an area that interests you who will give you information and advice. It is an effective research tool in addition to reading books, exploring the Internet, and examining job descriptions. It is not a job interview, and the objective is not to find job openings.”
So, if it’s not a job interview and the objective isn’t finding a job opening, how does the Ben Franklin effect come into play? If used correctly, the informational interview acts as that unrepaid favor from one stranger (the professional who has a position of power at a company you want to work for) to another (you, who asked for the informational interview).
When you take someone out for coffee to conduct an informational interview, what you’re really doing is making your future job application personal. “Conventional wisdom has long been to repay favors,” explained Steve Dalton, author of The 2-Hour Job Search. “For example, if someone agrees to speak to you for an informational interview, you might send them a gift in thanks… however, this turns the encounter into a transaction. As Ben Franklin confirmed hundreds of years ago, sometimes the best payback is no payback at all.”
